Is a big whiskey glass too small for a hamster?

Hunter Speil asked:
I bought a hamster a month ago, but I didn’t buy a cage; but I thought that a big whiskey glass would be OK. I play with him for at least 10 minutes a day while giving him water. But for the last few days, he has just been sitting in the cup not moving and staring completely into space; before he used to wiggle around in the cup and pivot around, now he is in a trance, the only time he looks alive is when he is chewing food. Could it be because the whiskey glass is too small for him or because he is mentally disordered?
